The club would like to express its deepest sympathy to the family of Celine Kelly, Drogheda. May she Rest In Peace.

Played in calm, cold conditions Naomh Fionnbarra recorded a good win over Hunterstown Rovers in the 3rd Round of the Paddy Sheelan Cup at Darver on Friday evening. The Rovers made the brighter start and got the first score but the gradually worked their way into the game. The Togher men got on the scoresheet via an early goal after a high ball caused confusion in the Hunterstown full back line and full forward Gary Matthews was on hand to finish the ball into the empty net. A number of points for the Barrs followed as the Hunterstown had no answer to the pressure from the Togher men and their work rate.

Scorers in the first half included Jack Butterly with 3 classy points, the Osborne brothers Hugh & Conor and Pádraig Butterly all a well taken effort. Square man Gary Matthews was on hand again towards the end of the half to fist home a goal over the Hunterstown keeper and pile further misery on the Rovers. They were only able to muster a single point in reply at the other end as the Finbarrs defence was very solid and managed to break up many Hunterstown attacks. A good save from Bernard Osborne also kept them at bay. Half time score: Naomh Fionnbarra 2-7(13) Hunterstown Rovers 0-2(2)

After what was probably a good dressing down by their manager at half time Hunterstown upped it a gear in the second half and tacked on a number of points and a goal as the Barrs struggled to regain the momentum from the previous half. Jack Butterly who was still on fire scored another fine point to add to the lead once again. This was followed up by another goal for the Finbarrs as that man Gary Matthews scored another goal this time finished with aplomb with the left peg for a hat trick. He was set up by Jack Butterly who received a quick ball into the full forward line after the midfield and forwards turned over a Hunterstown kick out. This gave the Togher men the breathing space they needed.

Hunterstown scored a few more points but couldn’t get back on level terms. Both Bryan Sharkey and Jack Butterly were also unlucky not to score more goals for the Barrs. Nicholas Butterly rounded off the scoring with a point off the post for the Finbarrs while Bernard Osborne produced another fine save at the other end. The Barrs were well served by a solid keeper and full back line, a hard running half back line, both midfielders who battled hard throughout along with hard working forwards who kicked some good points. Star of the show was no other than the hat-trick hero Gary Matthews! Final score: Naomh Fionnbarra 3-9(18) Hunterstown Rovers 1-11(14)

Naomh Fionnbarra Team: Bernard Osborne, Hugh McGrane, Kieran Lenihan, Michael McGrane; Bryan Sharkey, Óisín McGee, Pádraig Butterly 0-1; John Doyle, Patrick McGrane; Hugh Osborne 0-2, Conor Osborne 0-1(f), Nicholas Butterly 0-1; Jack Butterly 0-4, Gary Matthews 3-0, Máirtín Murphy. Subs: Pádraic Murphy for Máirtín Murphy, Chris McGlynn for Nicholas Butterly.

First Camogie Session St Fechins

Paddy Sheelan Cup

Round 2

St Fechins 2-6

Newtown Blues 1-9

St Fechins gained their first point in the Paddy Sheelan Cup in a tight encounter played in Beaulieu on Friday Night. Newtown Blues dominated the opening ten minutes but could not turn possession into points as they kicked five wides in a row. The first score of the night came from the home side when Niall Devlin burst through the Blues defence to score a goal after fifteen minutes. The Blues once again took control of the play and scored four points before half time, three from Robert Carr and one from Fergal O’Donoghue.

The second half began with another Carr point, followed quickly by a Lorcan McQuillan goal to leave the visitors ahead by five early in the half. Niall Devlin started the Fechins comeback with two excellent points. A Danny Burnell free narrowed the margin further but Carr struck again with two further Blues points. A long range point from Fechins midfielder Ryan Sheridan was cancelled out by a point from Paul Moore. Substitute Brendan Fanning broke forward from midfield and slotted over a point to leave three points in the difference. Minutes later Fechins full forward John Crosbie rounded his marker and struck for goal, only to be denied by the woodwork. Luckily Brian Devlin was on hand to finish the ball into the net. A point from Jamie King in the thirtieth minute looked like it might be enough for the Termonfeckin men to take all the points, but a Blues free from McQuillan

Colm Geary Cup (Special Hurling League)

Round 1

St Fechins 3-11

Naomh Moninne 0-5

St Fechins began the new season where they left off in 2016 with a rousing defeat of Naomh Moninne in Beaulieu on Saturday night. With ten players on county duty, they fielded a youthful side in the opening round of the Colm Geary Cup, but their dominance at minor level is having the desired effect with young guns Ian Connor and Liam Ryan dominating play in the middle of the field backed up by an excellent performance from rookie ‘keeper John Stephenson.

The home side enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half and raced to an early lead scoring a goal and eight points without reply. Connor and Ryan opened the scoring with well taken points from play before Michéal Byrne slotted over the first of his frees. Connor and Byrne were on target again before Sean Hodgins found the back of the net for his side’s first goal. Centre back Oisín Byrne put over a point from distance, while John Crosbie and Barry Devlin both struck points from difficult angles. With five minutes remaining in the half, Naomh Moninne got on the scoresheet with a well taken point from play, but from the puck-out Ian Connor had replied for St Fechins with a goal. St Fechins finished out the half with 65’ from Michéal Byrne and a Vincent Hynes point, while a Moninne point on the verge of half time left the score at 2-10 to 0-2.

Naomh Moninne began the second half with a fresh impetus, scoring three unanswered points, two frees from Ronan Geoghegan and one from play by Oisín Drumm, but were unable to close the gap any further. Michéal Byrne scored the last of his four points from placed balls midway through the half and Ian Connor completed his scoring with a second goal. Late in the game John Stephenson ended the scoring with a long distance free. Both teams will be disappointed with the wide count in the second half and will hope to improve when they open their Leinster Club Hurling League campaigns next weekend.

St Fechins:

John Stephenson 0-1 (0-1f), Cormac McAuley, Robert Moynagh, Paddy Reddy, Oisín Byrne 0-1, Donnacha O’Connell, Liam Ryan 0-1, Sean McConnell, Michéal Byrne 0-4 (0-3f, 0-1 65’), Vincent Hynes 0-1, Ian Connor 2-2, Sean Hodgins 1-0, John Crosbie 0-1, Barry Devlin 0-1

Subs: Brendan Hynes, Matthew McEvoy, Evan McGrane, Brian O’Connell, Conor Higgins

PSC Match Report

St Fechins 0-6

Clan na Gael 1-8

With five minutes to go in this first game of the year the teams were level. In the closing minutes the Clans scored 1-2 to end the match with a five point victory. Up to then it looked like the Termonfeckin outfit would prevail on their home turf. On a cold, breezy morning, the locals opened the scoring through Niall Devlin. Two points from Danny Burnell were followed by another from Colm O’Neill. Clan na Gael replied with points from M. Newell and S. Calem to leave the half time score at four points to two in favour of the Fechins. Having played with a strong wind in the first half, St Fechins kicked seven wides, this came back to haunt them at the finish. Playing into the wind the Fechins extended their lead through Colm O’Neill. P. Martin replied for the Clans two minutes later. Niall Devlin restored the three point lead in the twentieth minute, but this was to be the Fechins last score. Two points from C.Noonen were followed by points from A. McGlynn, S. Fitzpatrick and JJ. Quigley. M. McGeary finished the game when he freely tapped the ball into the Fechins net after a mix up in defence.

St Fechins GFC

Well done to all our players who represented Louth at the weekend. Between football, hurling and ladies football we had over ten players starting for their county, with more making appearances. Even though all results did not go our way, our players contributed greatly, scoring in all games.

St Fechins Adult Football, Ladies Football and Hurling teams are beginning their preparations for the 2017 season. As always we welcome any new players or returning players. If anyone is interested in playing for our adult teams please contact St Fechins on Facebook.

Even though our pitches are quiet at the moment our committees are very busy preparing for the new year. Our underage coaches have been attending coaching seminars, our PR team has been attending workshops and our development committee has been planning the future of the club. We would love to hear from anyone who like to be involved or could bring their expertise and skills to our club committees.

Committee 2017

St Fechins and Louth Hurler Seaghan Conneely is nominated for Drogheda Independent Sports Star of the Year Award after his goal scoring heroics for Louth in Croke Park. We hope that all St Fechins supporters will fill in and return the form in the Sport section of the DI this week.

Best of luck to our players who are representing Louth this weekend. On Sunday Bevan Duffy and Ronan Holcroft will be part of the Louth Senior who face Dublin in the O’Byrne Cup Final in Drogheda. Good luck also to our players who line out with Louth Hurlers against Longford in the Keogh Cup and with Louth Ladies as they open their National League campaign away to Carlow.

St. Fechins juvenile hurlers started their 2017 season with an outing organised by Ulster GAA at the DKIT indoor arena in Dundalk. Clubs from Louth, Armagh, Cavan Down attended the event with clubs organised into 4 groups. Up first for our young hurlers was St. Patricks and despite a bit of rustiness following the Christmas layoff it took the boys little time to dispatch their opponents. Darragh Stone bossed midfield and ensured a plentiful supply of ball into the forwards with poacher supreme Cathal Moynagh dispatching the ball to the net. Despite his 40 hour trip home from New Zealand, Seamus Rushe showed no symptoms of jet lag with few balls passing him in defence.
A quick turnaround was required for the next match against Craobh Rua and a few positional changes saw Cian Corrigan and Issac Smith moving into defence. The boys provided a solid platform repelling every attack and delivering good ball up to the forwards. With Michael McGlew and Andrew O’Reilly up front benefitting from the plentiful supply of ball, the goals came quick and fast with Andrew finishing on a hat- trick by full time.
The final match for St. Fechins was Killeavey from Armagh who would give the boys a stern test. The boys conceded a goal early but kept their composure and with Colm Hackett dominating in midfield the boys moved into the lead with two goals. Darragh Stone then added another goal with the best move of the match starting from defence. Goals were then traded by both teams in what proved to be a good standard of hurling till the final whistle was blown by Eoghan Hackett from St Fechins who officiated on behalf of the club at the blitz.
This event will be run again in three weeks time with St. Fechins getting to play a different set of teams and will prove beneficial as they strive to improve their skills for the coming seasons competitions.

St Fechins AGM took place in Forge Field Café on Friday December 30th 2016. The following positions on the Club Committee were filled on the night:

St Fechins and Louth Hurler Seaghan Conneely is nominated for Drogheda Independent Sports Star of the Year Award after his goal scoring heroics for Louth in Croke Park. We hope that all St Fechins supporters will fill in and return the form in the Sport section of the DI.

The club would like to say a huge thanks to Ciaran Carr for all the photographs throughout the year and also to all our sponsors who sponsored us in anyway throughout the year,The club would like to wish you all Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year.

The club would like to thank Mags Murphy for her outstanding work she has done with the ladies committee and as chairperson of the ladies committee.A huge thanks to Stephen and Ciara Nugent,Lisa Finglas and Ronan Philips for their hard work and commitment with our minor ladies.

A special note of thanks to the ‘Godfather’ of the Ladies Mags MURPHY nee Phillips who is taking a well earned break from the chair but we haven’t let her off the committee! Our ladies club started in 1999 and it wasn’t easy to get going. There were many obstacles that had to be overcome but Mags and her band of followers knew that this was something important for our community and was needed to bring great football, friendships and memories for our ladies. Throughout the years of growth no woman or child was safe from a call up to the team to get 15 on the pitch but the fruits have come good over the last number of years with underage and ladies teams that are competing at the highest levels in Louth with county representation across all ages. Along with the commitment to the ladies club on and off the pitch, Mags was also secretary of the mens and is a great source of knowledge on anything GAA. We appreciate all your hard work Mags as now we have a ladies club that is growing from strength to strength due to your commitment and enthusiasm. Now you get to come down to the field with a new sense of freedom. GO RAIBH MÍLE MAITH AGAT.

Naomh Fionnbarra G.F.C.

The 60th AGM of Naomh Fionnbarra G.F.C. was held in Dillonstown School on Monday 23rd November at 8pm.   The meeting was well attended from all levels of the club.  Colm Markey the outgoing Chairman thanked all those who helped the club throughout the year in all aspects of the club including players, supporters, mentors and committee members.  He also thanked anyone who provided sponsorship to the club over the course of the year.  Thomas McQuillan and Brenda Flynn gave detailed secretary and treasurer reports.  The Juvenile report by Brendan Healy highlighted a great year for the club while Mark McArdle and Joe O’Reilly provided updates in relation to Develiopment and Finance.  Items such as Club Membership, Fundraising, Adult & Juvenile Football, Finances and Club Development were discussed on the Agenda.

The 2016 year was successful both on and off the field.  Whilst the Intermediate team were not hugely successful they reached the Quarter Final of the Championship losing out to eventual winners St. Josephs and retained their status in Division 2 with a vital win over Roche Emmets in the relagation play off.  The adult men’s teams will play in the Intermediate Championship, in  the Division 2 League, in the Paddy Sheelan Cup and in the Division 4 League in 2017.

The juvenile section of the club catered for age groups from U-8 to U-18.  Every Thursday evening throughout the year John Markey Park in Ballygassan was full of young players practising their gaelic football skills.  2016 was quite a progressive year as all players developed their potential further.  The main highlights of the year on the field included capturing the U-16 “B” Championship and U-18 Division 3 League and being Runners Up in the; Minor “B” Championship, U-16 Division 3 League, U-15 Division 3 League, U-14 “B” Championship and Division 3 League and U-13 Division 3 League.  There is great potential amongst many of the players within our minor crop and hopefully they can progress onto the senior team in the coming years.

The Ladies team had mixed success throughout the year as they competed in the Intermediate League and Championship.  Congratulations to Naomh Fionnbarra/Dreadnots U-16 girls who beat St. Feckins in the U-16 B Championship Shield Final on Friday 19th August in Drogheda. Well done girls!  Naomh Fionnbarra/Dreadnots U-14 girls who lost to Glen Emmets in the U-14 championship semi final on Monday 15th August in Tullyallen.  The U-14 girls also lost the league semi final to Newtown Blues.

Colm McCullough represented the club as a referree for the second year.

The club would also like to congratulate all of our playing members who represented Louth with pride at county level in various age groups from juvenile to the Junior team.

The club would also like to congratulate St. Annes camogie club on the progress that they made this year.

Off the field significant milestones were reached with the initial phase of development of the new training field at John Markey Park, the upgrading work around the existing field which included the walking/running track, upgraded training lights along with lighting for the track, the continuation of the “Club Barrs 2015-2017” membership scheme and the successful Strictly Come Dancing event which was the club’s main fundraiser for the year.  Without doubt the club has ambitious plans for the ground development in the near future which will benefit the whole community and we look forward to progressing these plans further in 2016.  The club are especially grateful to all volunteers, Lotto collectors, sponsors, donors and any other benefactors who have helped us throughout the year in these areas.
