Good start to the Champo for Louth. away win too! 100% Leinster champ record in mullingar!

Gally was ok bit dodgy under a couple of high balls and 2 kickout over the sideline some great saves though to keep us in the game especially in the 2nd half. Dessie was very good – aggressive and got into the game straight away-set the tone! Fanning actually mopped up well in 2nd half and was worth his selection, a bit dodgy on the ball sometimes and wasn’t great on big Duffy in the 1st. Big hit on McCormack in 2nd! Reido made some great runs from deep and took on Westmeath in 2nd half. Jobser solid, destroyed Dolan in 1st half but under pressure with pace of Mccormack in 2nd. Pop OK. A few good interceptions but a bit loose at times. O’hare the same, he looked a bit stiff not great pace and was loose at times too, vital interception in 2nd half. In fairness Glennon very fast (good job he can’t shoot).

Pk immense unreal engine as usual. Really dug in after the Westmeath goal. The 2 points in the 2nd half kept us in touch after the Westmeath goal. Was a bit wasteful in 1st half but as usual kept going and going. Maguire brilliant. took on their defence on the counter attack – 5pts! Westmeath couldn’t handle his pace. Deccie kicked some superb points and passes but work rate can still improve. White hit and miss looked disinterested at times poor work rate, a few good passes. Andy ok, worked hard but didn’t create trouble like he can. He will improve in open spaces of Croke Park. Lennon good start and was a decent target inside. Not sure why he was moved out as it didn’t do him or the team any good. Didn’t move freely though and faded after his bad miss in the 2nd. Grimes was actually effective enough too good target and his power caused problems. Some début for him and Burns too. The composure of the lad! Has been doing this in club football since last summer! Even apart from the goal great movement off the ball – exactly what was needed. James Stewart also done well, has a decent turn of pace and got involved straight away. Donnelly found the pace tough going and Reilly only on for a few minutes. Counter attacking system worked fairly well after a shaky start where too many men were too deep. All in all good win!

No point getting carried away though – only 1st round and I’m sure Jason Ryan was studying the action! Lots to improve on 14 wides for a start. At the start of the 2nd half Louth were wasteful and before the Westmeath goal they should have been further ahead. A better team would have capitalised. Hopefully the game will bring the team on and this isn’t the peak of the summer like the win in Laois last year. Looking forward to the analysis on for the Kildare game!!!

Overall good performance, a week bit slow to start and some changes were long enough coming but once made showed the difference

Delighted that they got the win – hopefully that’ll give Louth confidence and they can have a good run in the championship…
