Louth Under 16’s

win Versus Meath Report

Louth produced a fine battling display to overcome a strong Meath outfit in Oldcastle last Thursday played in perfect conditions. Louth started the game slowly after a mix up in the Louth defence Meath capitalised to grab a goal after 7 minutes. Louth responded well with points from Conor Whelan(2) and Emmet Hughes and were only 1.3 to 0.3 points down after 15 minutes. The 2nd quarter of the game was a very strange spell in the game with Louth spurning several goal scoring and point scoring opportunities. Although in the last 5 minutes of the half Louth tagged on 3 vital points to go in at half time 1.3 to 0.6

The last 5 minutes of the first half was a sign of what this Louth team has to offer. Louth blitzed Meath in the first 10 minutes of the second half with Brendan Matthews pouncing on a mistake in the Meath defence and buried a shot from close range. Louth accounted for three vital points in this period with the very impressive Whelan accounting for 2 of these.

The energy shown by the Louth half back line was very impressive with Brendan Matthews, David Cluskey and Danny O Brien (who was later names Man of the Match) all driving the team forward. With 40 minutes on the clock The Wee county led 2.6 to 1.3 but failed to score for the next ten and let Meath capitilise and they responded with a goal and two points of their own.

It was time for leaders to stand up in the Louth outfit and stand up they did. Sean Marry, Dion Conlon, Cian Callan and Emmet Hughes drove at Meath and caused all sorts of problems for Meath with Conor Whelan putting the finishing touches to some of these moves. Conlon made a driving run through the centre and linked with Killian Kampes and Hughes to drive a rasper of a shot to the back of the Royals net.

Yet again Louth took their foot off the pedal and let Meath in for a sloppy goal after the ball ricocheted off the post. Louth battled back yet again and even though it was a nervy last 5 minutes St Brides man Sean Marry finished a superb move to round the goalie calmly and slot into an empty net. Louth were sloppy at spells but with management down a few players due to holidays etc this was a massive victory and now look forward to a Round 3 fixture against Westmeath next weekend.
