I know it’s January, I can feel the cold outside like everybody else.

but, this is already a big game in our year. Here’s my Preview.

Form Guide

Meath hammered Carlow on opening day in quite convincing fashion. Then midweek they lost to UCD but hit the woodwork 7 times! (The crossbar was struck 4 times and upright 3.)
Worryingly of all, they beat Laois by 8 points last Sunday, no easy feat.

So although Meath are going to be unfamiliar looking on paper, they are going to be their familiar formidable selves.

Whereas we’d enough possession and should have beaten Offaly but it was very much doom and gloom as soon as the final whistle went.
A feel good win over a very much experimental Kildare line up away during the week set us up for last Sunday when we put DIT to bed with little worries.
I feel we are somewhere in between the 3 results.
From being very good, to slipping back to below average.

Where the game will be won.

Drogheda to be precise:
Okay that’s the location but the terrain of the Gaelic Grounds is hard to judge sometimes. Seeing as it is our first game there this season we’ll have to adapt just as quickly if not quicker than Meath.
It’s going to be interesting to see how our new system applies to our county ground also. we’ve three league games there this season and importantly our opening league game will be there also.

System:
We’ve conceded one goal in all three games and looked quite solid at the back this season. That’s part of the system I’m not worried about going forward is, we’ve yet to play a settled defence or a defensive system rather that knows each other quite well. How paitent we are with the ball and finding the inside target will be where the game will be won.

Discipline:
Meath have given away a waft of frees, scorable free’s in their 3 O’Byrne cup games. It cost them their UCD game and the games they have won they’ve allowed the other side to stay afloat.
We boast a number of reliable free takers in our Squad. Jim, Ronan, Judge and Peach we’ll look to punish Meath there if they are feeling overzealous in the tackle on Sunday

Verdict

Division 2 team plays a Division 4 team. Division 2 team should win. That is not necessarily the case, as all game are not won on paper.
Particularly this time of year.

I think we’ve a have little more hunger for the win, CK will be pushing for an O’Byrne cup final too, that was highlighted in his strong selection against DIT the last day out. It will help relieve some pressure off his back.

Long term, the outcome of a number of battles will mould our team for the season.
This will be our rookies first real test and it will be great to see how they fare. Darren McMahon, David Quigley, Cathal Bellew, Keith McLaughlin and Conall McKeever could have a big say on the success of our season especially as we could face Meath again in the summer.

Either way, Come 4pm on Sunday afternoon we’ll know exactly where they and we as a whole are at and that’s what the O’Byrne Cup is all about.

That is why it is a big game just 17 days into the new year.

Louth win.

I think we will be ok on Sunday, I know it’s the O’Byrne cup & Meath are always a hard task but I think everyone on the panel has stepped up to the plate so far (O’Fiach cup & O’Byne cup). They will all know the importance of this game to players & fans alike. The system is working well so far even with many swaps & substutions. I have a good feeling about Sunday so best of luck lads….An Lu Abu.
